Emotional Reactions of Mothers to the Child¢¥s Hospitalization


Abstract
Hospitalized patients and family experience emotional distress caused by many factors; abrupt changes of daily life, fear, anxiety and discomfort due to disease and also to hospital care.
Such distress is known to hinder development and growth of children and interfere recovery from illness.
This study was performed to investigate the emotional reaction of mothers of hospitalized: children in order to attain data basic in the care of sick children.
Mothers of 116 children who have been admitted for more than two days at Red Cross, Hospital, Seoul and Colomban Hospital, Mok Po from June 7 through September 30, 1976 were sampled.
Interviews were carried out by research assistants trained by the researcher according to. check-list developed by the researcher.
Results are as follows;
1. Most of mothers (93.97%) experienced anxiety and fear; the most prevalent causes revealed to be 1) facing symptoms and signs which seem serious, 2) prognosis of the disease.
2. Neither the characteristics of hospitalized child and mother nor the residential revealed to have in influenced on the anxiety and fear.
3. The lack of close attention and deep concern followed by coldness and indifference revealed to the 1st and second in rank order among the mothers comments on hospital nursing care given. by nurse and nurses¢¥ attitudes.
4. Neither the characteristics of child and the mother nor residential area revealed to have influenced on the nature of the comments.
5. Child¢¥s behavioral changes during hospitalization perceived by the mothers revealed to be negative (82. 03%); most prevalent manifestations were; greater demand of attention and tend to become more dependent, and new fear.
6. Neither the characteristics of child and the mother nor residential area revealed to have influenced on the nature of behavioral changes.
